Join us at I/O for the first in our series of Window Performances, and the start of ‘Hot Sounz! in the Galleries’ weekend.
Window Performances are where the audience will be asked to watch, listen, and sometimes actually participate outside, while musicians perform in the windows of the gallery.

Come to watch this revolutionary piece involving 840 repetitions of a single page of score. Vexations is apparently conceived for keyboard (though the manuscript does not specify any instrument). The theme and its accompanying chords are written using strikingly eccentric and impractical enharmonic notation. The piece is undated, but scholars usually assign a date around 1893. John Cage and his friends performed this work in 1963 for 19 hours on any instrument except the piano.

For this performance marathon in Hong Kong, we will be using any instrument, from toy piano, violin and laptop. Multiple interpretations appreciated!

Friday 3rd September: Window Performance 2 (Handover Party), 7.30pm FREE
Greg Wildes, Hong Kong Handover
Presented by Unmeasured Music HK

An event to celebrate I/O’s 2nd year; a chance to say goodbye to Rachel Connelly who has been leading I/O’s programme for the last year, and to welcome I/O’s newest member, Curator Joel Kwong, who will lead the gallery into new ventures; she will also be Artistic Director of I/O Off-Site.

To mark this occasion we present the second of our Window Performances. Greg Wildes (USA, based in HK) performs a fitting piece entitled, Hong Kong Handover. Since moving to Hong Kong last year Wildes has been seeking to understand Hong Kong identity and has developed this piece as an interactive means to engage others in this quest. By literally holding hands and bridging a gap across Hong Kong to China, participants complete circuits which modulate an audio mix of Hong Kong, English, and Chinese elements.

Greg Wildes work ranges from multi-instrumental free improvisation to digital sample library production. He is the founder of legendary DIY electro-acoustic bands the Ski-A-Delics and Gas Tank Orchestra. While majoring in contemporary music at Wesleyan University with composers Alvin Lucier and Ron Kuivila he also studied with masters of African, Indian, and Javanese music. Previous exhibition/performances include: Kingston Gallery, Boston, MA; Waiting Room Gallery, New Orleans, LA; Jack Tilton Gallery, New York, NY.
